Ohio Senate Bill 293, the bill that would close the 4-day window for absentee ballots to be accepted, has finally reached Governor DeWine’s desk. This bill would mean thousands of valid absentee ballots mailed on time from eligible Ohio voters could just be thrown away because of delays outside of voters' control— but Governor DeWine can still stop it from happening.

Right now, absentee ballots that are mailed and postmarked by the Monday before Election Day are counted as long as they arrive within four days of the election. SB 293 takes those four days away from voters. If the governor signs SB 293 into law, thousands of legal ballots from eligible voters could be rejected because of the post office, not the voter.

Eliminating this ballot acceptance period will especially hurt Ohio seniors, voters with disabilities, rural voters, college students, and working Ohioans who depend on voting by mail. And it gets worse—last minute changes to the bill will make it harder for election workers to do their jobs and surge the number of provisional ballots, which will slow down voting for everyone on Election Day.

None of this will do a thing to make our elections more secure, it just makes our elections less accessible for voters.

Governor DeWine can veto this bill, but time is running out and he needs to hear from Ohioans across the Buckeye state now. Email Gov. DeWine now and urge him to VETO Senate Bill 293, then follow up with calls to his office and staff. Tell him no one’s vote should be thrown away because of slow mail.

Message:

Dear Governor DeWine, I am writing to urge you to reject SB 293, which would eliminate Ohio’s 4-day acceptance window for absentee ballots that were mailed on time by eligible voters and postmarked by the day before Election Day. Ohioans with disabilities, rural Ohioans, Ohio seniors, and the working Ohioans who are most reliant on absentee voting to be able to participate in elections are at an especially high risk of having their votes thrown out simply because of mail delays. SB 293 wouldn’t result in more secure elections. Strong safeguards like signature matching, ballot tracking, and bipartisan oversight already make voting by mail secure—what this bill would result in is fewer valid votes being counted. Ohio’s 4-day acceptance period doesn’t extend the time Ohio voters can cast a ballot, it’s simply a mail delivery window to ensure ballots from eligible voters are counted. According to the Ohio Secretary of State's office, in the 2024 election, nearly 10k valid votes were received and counted by Ohio boards of elections in those four days following Election Day. Imagine thousands of legal ballots from eligible voters being rejected because of postal inefficiencies out of the voters control—that's what would happen if SB 293 were allowed to pass. You have said on multiple occasions since you signed HB 458 into law in 2023 that you did not want to see any more big changes to Ohio election law during your remaining time in office, and SB 293 represents significant change to our laws that offer no benefit and will harm voters across our state. It is the duty of the state to ensure every valid vote cast by every eligible voter be counted. SB 293 is unnecessary and would undermine the accessibility, integrity, and fairness Ohio voters have come to expect from our elections. I urge you to veto SB 293.
