The Ohio Legislature has introduced a voting bill that uses a few common-sense reforms as cover, but will ACTUALLY take our state two steps forward and then 10 steps back...

After conducting one of the most secure elections in Ohio's history in 2020, the state legislature just introduced HB 294, a voting reform bill that adds some potentially good provisions, but also includes a host of anti-voter provisions, like

shortening the absentee ballot request period
making voter-ID requirements unnecessarily confusing and restrictive
reducing access to drop boxes (which are used for registration and voting purposes)

We need to speak up right now to hold our leaders accountable so that we can keep the good and throw out the bad in this bill. Send a message to your legislator to demand they remove deliberate barriers to voting.

Ohio conducted one of the most secure elections in Ohio's history in 2020, and we should work to build on that by making improvements that are supported by voters and elections officials alike. While I am encouraged to see that HB294 contains potential improvements such as automated registration, online absentee ballot requests, acceptance of electronic utility bills as a form of identification, and the codification of election administration plans, that doesn't offset my concerns. HB294 contains several troubling and unacceptable provisions that would unnecessarily create new barriers for Ohioans to exercise their freedom to vote. Please ensure that the following measures are removed from HB294 and left out of any other legislation: - Reducing access to secure, efficient drop boxes - Requiring excessive and complicated identification rules that create unnecessary work for elections officials and poll workers, while likely denying eligible voters - Making it harder for active-duty military voters overseas to vote. -Undermining Ohioans' freedom to vote in the manner of their choice These provisions are not "election reform" and need to be removed. Early and Absentee Voting are secure forms of voting often preferred or needed by senior citizens, people with disabilities, veterans, rural Ohioans, and minority communities. Increasing access to Early Voting and Absentee Voting serves all Ohioans by reducing lines on Election Day. Ohio should increase access, not reduce it. Thank you for your consideration.
