TELL CONGRESS: VOTE NO ON THE SAVE ACT

The US House has paused voting on the SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) Act, to focus on a separate procedural matter, giving us more time to call our members and tell them to vote NO. SAVE is an extreme anti-voter bill that would require Americans to present documentary proof of citizenship to register or re-register to vote in federal elections, even though voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering. For most Americans, this ID is limited to a US passport or a birth certificate.

More than half of all Americans do not hold a passport, and millions don't have easy access to their birth certificate. And there is no plan for Americans whose current name is different from their birth certificate, which includes millions of women who changed their name when they got married.

What’s more, many eligible voters don’t have easy access to the necessary documents. State driver’s licenses, REAL ID, and veteran’s ID would no longer be accepted.

It gets worse.

SAVE would require all Americans to prove their citizenship status by presenting documentation in person when registering to vote or updating their voter registration information, which would be the end of registering to vote online or by mail for most voters. This would be especially difficult for rural voters, older voters, and voters with disabilities.

The SAVE Act would not make voting more secure, it would just make it harder for millions of Americans to vote.

It is already illegal for noncitizens to register and vote in federal or state elections. The bill’s requirement of a document to prove American citizenship to register to vote in federal elections is unnecessary and would waste state and federal resources that could be better spent on effective election security.

Our democracy works best when all eligible Americans can vote: tell your member of Congress to vote NO on the SAVE Act.

As your constituent, I urge you to oppose HR 22, the SAVE Act, which would require citizenship documentation to register to vote despite the fact that voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering. It is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections. Additionally, state election officials ban non-citizen voting in all state elections and have systems to verify an individual voter’s eligibility and ensure that voter rolls are accurate. The bill’s requirement of a document to prove American citizenship to register to vote in federal elections is unnecessary and creates yet another barrier to voting. Married women whose names are different than what's on their birth certificate are especially vulnerable to disenfranchisement under SAVE, as the bill does not have a clear plan for what states should do when a voter's legal name doesn't match their birth certificate. And by effectively ending in-person and mail-in voter registration, rural voters, older voters, and voters with disabilities will face additional barriers when they try to register or re-register to vote. Vote “No,” on the SAVE Act to ensure that every eligible US citizen has the freedom to vote unimpeded by discriminatory rules rooted in fear and division.

Here are some tips for effective communication with our lawmakers.

Have a clear and concise message: Write or speak briefly about the issue and finish with your ask ("vote no/yes on x", "increase funding for x", "create legislation that will x"). If you are communicating about a specific bill, be sure to provide the bill number and sponsor. Elected officials and their staff are often dealing with a high volume of calls, so a focused message makes it easier for them to understand and respond to.
Use the message you just sent as a script: Adapt it to make it shorter or more personal, or read it as-is.
Personalize your message: Why is this important to you? What is your connection to the issue? Make it a story so you stand out.
Identify yourself as a constituent: Most lawmakers will immediately disregard someone who is outside of their district, so be sure to let them know you are a potential voter.
Why phone calls? Person-to-person communication is the most effective. It shows effort and passion, and gives you and the legislator (or their staff) the chance for an actual conversation.
