The Budget Conference Committee is now working to reconcile the House and Senate versions of the budget. Send a message to the OH Legislature's leadership and to the conference committee demanding that they abandon the unfair and inadequate funding plan proposed by the Senate!
With lightening-speed and minimal scrutiny the Ohio Senate received an alternative school funding proposal on June 1 and on June 8 passed it on a party line vote of 25-8. The House rejected the plan, voting 85-7-7. It is now up to the conference committee of three members of both the House and Senate to reconcile the diametrically different school funding options.
The two options reflect opposite priorities. The House, after experts identified a complete and objective assessment of costs, set per pupil spending for public school students at $7,200 and maintained private school voucher spending at $6,000. The Senate prioritized private education. The senate plan set the cost per pupil for public school students at $6,110 and for private school at $7,500.
State lawmakers have a choice. They can make Ohio the standard bearer for funding a system of public education that is inclusive of all learners and sustainable for all communities. Or they can take public education backwards, increase reliance on school levies, and intensify inequality.
