LWVO Calls for Civility & Justice

The League of Women Voters of Ohio grieves the deaths of George Floyd and the countless other Black lives that have been tragically taken at the hands of law enforcement officers. We also mourn those who have lost their lives or been harmed, mentally or physically.

Closer to home, we are outraged at the threats and attacks made against Black leadership both in the General Assembly and the larger community as a result of America’s pervasive culture of anti-blackness.

We are also outraged at anti-semitic attacks against Dr. Amy Acton and lawmakers of Jewish descent.

The League supports equal rights for all under local, state, and federal law regardless of race, color,  gender, religion, national origin, age, sexual orientation, or disability. We, the citizens of Ohio, need to examine our attitudes regarding the treatment of all groups and individuals, but especially our leaders.

We must restore civility, commit to investigating issues from multiple viewpoints, and stand in solidarity with the wronged. LWO commits to continue to work toward just public policy so that our great state can be a safe and vibrant place for all Ohioans to live, work, and vote.

The League of Women Voters is fully committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, in principle and in practice. With a mission of empowering all voters and defending democracy, we stand in solidarity with minority communities. The League shall do so not only by speaking out against racism in all forms, but by doing the work required of us to be anti-racist.

As citizens of the United States, we must individually and collectively work to achieve justice for all. It is our responsibility to advocate for anti-discriminatory policies and practices at every level of government. A fully welcoming League is critical to our organization's future success, as we continue to strive to form a more perfect union. Please join us in that commitment.

Yours in League,

Iris Meltzer
