RAPID RESPONSE REQUESTED - Tell Governor DeWine to stop endangering the lives of innocent children and school personnel and VETO SUB House Bill 99
In the wake of the tragic Uvalde school shooting, and despite overwhelming oppositions from stakeholders and experts, Ohio legislators rushed a bill through committee that would reduce the required amount of training for armed school personnel from 700 hours to a mere 20! Extensive training beyond that of a concealed carry permit should be required to carry a weapon in a school for the health and safety of our children and our teachers. Without that training, school personnel would not have the ability to effectively make split second, life or death decisions.
SUB HB 99 must be stopped. For many students and communities, the presence of guns increases the sense of intimidation and fear, affecting their health and safety. The American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, National PTA, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio reject the idea of arming school personnel; and the National Association of School Resource Officers recommends that if school personnel are to be armed their training should be on par with law enforcement positions. And earlier this year, The Ohio Supreme Court ruled in Gabbard v. Madison Local School District Bd of Education that school personnel cannot carry firearms on school grounds unless they have completed basic police officer training or have at least 20 years of experience as a police officer. Yet lawmakers are trying to negate that decision.
